TAMPA ....The Council of World Affairs has hosted, US Senators,
Ambassadors, Congressmen, US and Foreign Dignitaries, Military
Generals, University Deans and Professors, Economists and other
leading experts on World Affairs. Discussions have been on
subjects from the war in Afghanistan and Iraq, to free trade
agreements, the situation in Venezuela, the Cuban Embargo, Off Shore
Drilling, World Currency, the global image of the United States,
Foreign business practices and the Panama Canal and hosting of Consul
Generals from the Consulates of Italy, Spain, France and Greece.
As the economy is
recovering from the worst economic recession since the great
depression, it has become increasingly difficult to maintain a
membership base which can sustain the council as just a "World
Affairs" organization. The decision to expand the scope is based on a growing interest from
the business sector to look at all alternate opportunities to develop
new business. International trade is an excellent way for
business to expand, but most do not have the knowledge or experience
to take steps to sell or market themselves in overseas markets. The
Distinguished Speakers Series of the World Affairs Council will continue as evening
programs. The Foreign Travel & Cultural Exchange Committee will offer
a series of programs which provide overviews and interesting
information on the cultural nuances, food and other information on
traveling in foreign countries.
By expanding to offer
trade related programs, it opens new venues of opportunity to members
by providing a resource through an organization which can provide
specific information and programs. It will offer assistance in the
form of a resource to develop overseas trade of their products and
services.
